WASHINGTON, D.C. - Gonzaga University men's crew continued its training for the upcoming IRA National Championships with a mixed race schedule on Saturday morning against George Washington University. The Bulldogs have been back in the Washington D.C. area since Thursday morning training for the annual championship event which takes place June 1-3 in Camden, N.J.
Gonzaga and GWU both have multiple boats entered in this year's IRA National Championships so both schools were able to race their IRA entry against stiff competition prior to the regatta. Gonzaga earned a bid with its Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ boats.
Gonzaga's Novice 8+ boat won its race against the Colonials posting a time of 5:58.8 with GWU crossing at 6:05.8. Gonzaga was also able to win the Novice 4+ race posting a time of 6:46.0 with GWU 13-seconds back at 6:59.8.+
On the varsity side Gonzaga raced its Varsity 4+ entry against the top four rowers from GWU's Varsity 8+. GWU won the contest by five seconds. GWU was in at 6:20.2 with Gonzaga crossing at 6:25.0.
Gonzaga then mixed its Varsity 4+ and top four novice rowers to make a combined 8+ boat. That boat competed against George Washington's Varsity 8+ entry for the IRA's. GWU won by seven seconds with a time of 5:47.3 compared to Gonzaga's mark of 5:55.5.
