Men's Crew Sending Two Boats To Opening Day Regatta

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's crew will send two boats across the state this weekend as the Bulldogs will compete in the 20th annual Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle. The Bulldogs will enter boats in the Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+.
Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ will take to the water around 10:30 a.m. competing against three boats from the University of Washington and one boat from Seattle Pacific and the Lake Union Rowing Club. Gonzaga is sending a Varsity 4+ that will be looking for a bid to this year's IRA National Championships at the end of the month. The Varsity 4+ includes senior stroke Connor Barry, coxswain Meghan Quinn, David Hinshaw, Matthew Wernette and bow Warren North. All four rowers in the boat has previous experience at the IRA championships including last year when both GU entries finished 7th in the nation.
Gonzaga's Novice 8+ is coming off a second place finish at the WIRA championships in Sacramento, Calif. The Bulldogs lost by one second to Orange Coast College in the Grand Final. GU will get a chance to avenge that loss as OCC is one of four boats entered the race scheduled for a start around 11 a.m. Also included in the race are Washington and Oregon State University. With a strong finish at the Opening Day Regatta, Gonzaga is looking for its Novice 8+ to earn a bid to the IRA championships. The Bulldogs have sent Novice 4+ boats to the IRA's over the past several years. Gonzaga's boat will be made up of coxswain Amanda Brown, stroke Greg Malman, Brendan McCarthy, Andre' Gallant, Pat Swihart, Ryan Roller, Brian Franceschi, Andrew Langfield and bow Jeff Haguewood.
