LOMPOC, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team, third after 18 holes at 315, skied to a second-round 331 Monday at the 11th annual West Coast Conference Championship being played at La Purisima Golf Course.
Senior Mary Kate Morgan is ninth with a 36-hole total of 156 to lead the Bulldogs as she bids for her second straight All-WCC honor which goes to the Top 10 finishers. She had rounds of 77-79 over the 6,069-yard, par 72 layout.
Senior Jennifer Swanson is 14th after rounds of 79-82 for a 161. Junior Sarah Sheffield had the only other sub-80 round of the first 36 holes for the Bulldogs with an opening-round 78, but she ballooned to a second-round 88 for a 166 and a tie for 20th.
Pepperdine University is all but assured its sixth straight WCC title after shooting 298-303 for a 601 and a seemingly insurmountable 22-stroke advantage over the University of San Francisco. Gonzaga is last at 646 in the five-team field, three shots behind the University of Portland.
The Waves also had the top two leaders in the medalist chase as Eileen Vargas shot 75-70 for a 145 for a 2-shot lead over teammate Misun Cho who shot 147 on rounds of 71-76. Kristin Nichols of USF is third at 152, and defending champion Jayvie Agojo of Pepperdine is 10th at 157.
The championship concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
