Pullman, Wash. - Rika Mehndiratta, of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, captured the #2 singles bracket championship title Sunday at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. Mehndirtta and doubles partner Danielle Farmer also captured the #2 doubles championship to mark the first time in the Bulldogs' history a Zag has captured a title at the Cougar Classic.
Participating in the three-day event is Gonzaga, Washington State, University of Idaho, Boise State University, Eastern Washington University, the University of Wyoming, the University of Montana and the University of Portland.
Mehndiratta, a freshman from Portland, Ore., captured the #2 singles title with a three-set victory over Washington State's Stefanova (7-5, 7-6, 7-4). In the back draw of the bracket, Bulldogs' Kristen MacWilliam and Farmer faced off, with Famer earning the victory by virtue of a default.
The doubles victory for Mehndiratta and Farmer came in the #2 doubles bracket with a closely fought 8-6 victory over the Cougars' Selaru and Nicolas. The Gonzaga duo of Courtney Lau and Clare Dodge won the consolation bracket with a victory due to default over Washington State's Gherman and Stefanova.
In the #1 singles bracket, Aglaya Kokurina and Emily Anderson placed third and fifth, respectively in the main draw. Kokurina posted a 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 victory over WSU's Kamendova to capture third, while Anderson defeated Portland's Sporndli in three-sets (7-6, 9-7, 6-3) for fifth place.
Carrie Schofield captured a fifth place finish in the #3 singles bracket by defeating Eastern Washington's Leuenberger. In the consolation bracket for the #3 singles, Lau defeated EWU's Makovits. The scores for both matches were unavailable at the time of this release.
In the #4 singles bracket, Katie Colton posted a fifth place finish with a default victory over Gherman of Washington State. Laura Housinger won the back draw of the bracket with a 6-7, 7-5, 6-0 victory over the Cougars' Konomos.
Anderson and Kokurina posted a sixth place finish in the #1 doubles bracket after dropping a 8-2 match to Knox/Mankovits of Eastern Washington.
The Bulldogs will continue the fall season Friday, Sept. 28, when they open play at the Eastern Washington University Invite at Cheney, Wash.
