SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University got solid showings from Sarah Sheffield and Elizabeth Jarrett, and the Bulldogs are in seventh place after 36 holes of the MDA Invitational women's golf tournament co-hosted by the Bulldogs and Eastern Washington University at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
And it's the Eagles sitting atop the leaderboard with a 4-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round which begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. EWU put together rounds of 298-303 for a 601. The University of Wyoming and Cal Poly are tied for second at 605 and UC Riverside is fourth at 607. Those four would seem to be the main contenders for the team title as the University of Portland is fifth at 618.
Jennifer Bermingham of UCR has the individual lead at 143 after rounds of 72-71 over the 6,176-yard, par 72 layout. She leads Hannah Brabb of Cal Poly by four strokes and Kristina Gargaro of EWU by five shots.
Gonzaga is seventh at 629, the Bulldogs getting off to a respectable 310 first round before faltering a little to 319 in the afternoon. The Bulldogs are four shots behind sixth-place Northern Arizona University.
Sheffield is 13th at 153 after 36 holes to pace the Bulldogs, shooting 76-77. Jarrett had the best opening round for Gonzaga with a 74, then shot 81 for a 36-hole total of 155 and a tie for 19th.
Bulldog freshman Rachel Sibbitt, playing as an individual, is tied for seventh at 151 after rounds of 73-78.
The conditions were perfect Monday with the temperature in the high 60's with mostly sunny skies and a light breeze.
