SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team begins its fall season competing in the Cougar Classic Draw hosted by Washington State University this weekend.
"This tournament gives us an opportunity to see how our young group plays in a competitive atmosphere," said fifth year head coach D.J. Gurule. "We have had a great couple weeks of training and this will be a great experience for our younger players."
The Zags will have nine players competing this weekend, including five players who return from last season, led by 2007 All-West Coast Conference second team honoree Aglaya Kokurina, the lone senior this year. In addition to Kokurina, the Bulldogs' roster for this weekend will be made up of five sophomores and four freshmen.
Players from eight schools throughout the Northwest will be competing including Washington State that was ranked among the nation's top-50 last season as well as the WCC's University of Portland.
"Our team has made some significant strides these first couple weeks of training," said Gurule. "This weekend is a chance for us to get out and match up against some outside competition and to see how we measure up."
In addition to this weekend, Gonzaga's fall schedule includes the GU/EWU Fall tournament in Cheney, Wash. Sept. 26-28, the St. Mary's Classic in Moraga, Calif. Oct. 10-12, and the ITA Regional's in Palo Alto, Calif. on Oct. 17-20.
