Three Players Advance To Finals at GU-EWU Classic

CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team had three players advance to the finals of all three Singles Brackets at the GU/EWU Classic played at Eastern Washington University Saturday. One Gonzaga doubles pairing also advanced to the quarterfinals in the Classic's Doubles Consolation bracket.
Senior Aglaya Kokurina posted a quarterfinal round win in the #1 Singles bracket over the University of Montana's Rebecca Bran 6-2, 7-5. The lone senior on the Bulldog roster then beat University of Idaho's Daniela Cohen 6-2 6-3 in the semifinal round to advance to Sunday's finale against Megan Sporndli from the University of Portland.
Sophomores Danielle Farmer and Rika Mehndiratta each won their respective quarterfinal match ups in the #1 Singles Consolation bracket. It was Mehndiratta who moved on to Sunday's consolation final after she posted a 6-3 6-1 victory over Portland's Stephanie Fuchs in the semifinal round.
Sophomore Clare Dodge advanced to Sunday's #2 Singles final after she beat EWU's Caitlyn Bampton 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and again rallied from behind to defeat EWU's Kelsey Knight 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Dodge will match up with Stefanie Doolittle of Portland in the final. After dropping quarterfinal matches, freshmen Sophie Lantta, Madeline Parker and Monica Price all posted wins later in the afternoon. Lantta beat Seattle University's Katrina Schaab 6-2, 6-1, Price beat Bampton from EWU and Parker beat UP's Anna Gullickson 6-3, 7-6.
Freshman Kristina Zauere earned a spot in Sunday's #3 Singles final match after recording a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal win over Cara Lehman from Montana and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Natalie Kirch from Idaho in the semi's. Zauere will play Idaho's Jana Siwa for the bracket's title. Sophomores Laura Housinger and Allyson Lee each posted victories in the #3 Singles Consolation bracket.
In doubles play, the Kokurina and Dodge pairing won their quarterfinal match over Idaho 8-4 but later dropped their semifinal match 8-5 to Portland. Lantta and Parker teamed up to win their second and third round matches in the Doubles Consolation bracket. The Zags freshmen pairing posted an 8-0 win over Seattle and an 8-5 decision over Montana to advance to Sunday's consolation semifinals.
The GU/EWU Classic wraps up play on Sunday.
