SPOKANE, Wash. - WSU claimed the Head of the Spokane with a victory in the Varsity 8+, crossing the finish line in 17:38.0 to Gonzaga's 18:27.0. The Cougars also claimed the 2nd Varsity 8+ and the Novice 8+. Gonzaga's lone victory of the day was in the 2nd Novice 8+, finishing in 20:59.0 to WSU's 22:44.0
The Gonzaga Varsity 8+ lineup consisted of Natalie Wolfrom, Alissa Stempson, Chelsie Eddings, Elise Perkins, Liz Moore, Chelsea Quilling, Sam Cekovic, Paula Welly, Sami Koppinger.
The early races were rowed on smooth water, but later races were hampered by a 10-15 mph headwind.
Flint said her squad now has a baseline for improvement.
"I think it was a good starting point. All the boats were excited about how they raced today. It's a good point in trying to figure out where we are as a team. We have a baseline now and what we have to do to get faster," Flint said.
She said the personnel is pretty well set in the boats, it's just a matter of switching some seats for the remainder of the fall season.
"Personnel wise we have what we have. I don't think that's going to change. We don't have any big injuries, but we will definitely make some switches between now and our next race," Flint said.
The Bulldogs won't have to wait long for their next outing. Following the annual Class Day Races Sunday that conclude Alumni Weekend festivities the Bulldogs will compete at the Head of the Snake hosted by WSU next Saturday. Their final outing of the fall will be Nov. 8 at the Head of the Lake in Seattle.
Flint said Saturday's outing provided experience for her squad.
"It's less experimental but more of a racing experience for them to get them down the course and fine tune some of those things," Flint said of her approach to Saturday's racing.
