Rowing Races WSU At Head of the Snake Friday

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams continue their 2009-10 fall seasons Friday when they travel to Pullman, Wash., for the seventh-annual Head of the Snake, hosted by Washington State University. Racing begins at 2:30 p.m. at the WSU Boathouse at Wawawai Landing.
ABOUT THE HEAD OF THE SNAKE: It its seventh year, the Head of the Snake features a 5,000-meter stretch of the Snake River. Racing is in a "head" format, which means the boats will start at 15 second intervals, racing both the clock and each other.
LAST YEAR AT THE HEAD OF THE SNAKE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team won all seven races against Washington State University a season ago, including the all-important Varsity 8+ race. The Zags claimed the marquee race in a time of 18:57.50 over the 5,000-meter course while the Cougars finished in 20:11.19. The Bulldog Second Varsity 8+ had the fastest time of the day as they finished the course with a time of 18:52.23. Washington State's Second Varsity 8+ claimed a time of 19:49.00. The Gonzaga University women's rowing team earned its lone victory over the Cougars a season ago in the Novice 8+. The Bulldogs crossed the finish line at 23:22.83 with WSU following at 24:12.51. Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ had a time of 20:55.03 behind Washington State's boat who clocked a time of 20:29.01.
HEAD MEN'S ROWING COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE SNAKE: "It has been an interesting week with some changes to the lineups but the real question is - what will the river bring us this year the Garden Snake or the Pit Viper?'"
HEAD WOMEN'S ROWING COACH MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE SNAKE: "We're looking to make some improvements from last weekend [Head of the Spokane]. We made some slight line-up changes and hopefully learned a little more this week as well."
HEAD OF THE SNAKE SCHEDULE:
Flight One - 2:30 p.m.: Women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight, novice lightweight eights.
Flight Two - 2:45 p.m.: Men's varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight.
Flight Three - 4:00 p.m.: Women's fourth varsity eight, third novice eight.
Flight Four - 4:15 p.m.: Men's second varsity eight, third varsity eight, third novice eight, fourth novice eight, fifth novice eight, varsity four.

Next Week: Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing squads will close out their fall season at the Head of the Lake, hosted by the University of Washington, Sunday, Nov. 8. The Head of the Lake is held at Montlake Cut in Seattle, Wash.
Directions to the WSU Boathouse at Wawawai Landing: From Highway 195 (north or south), turn west on Wawawai Road at the blinking yellow light. Travel on Wawawai Road for 10 miles, the road will end at a stop sign. Turn right and drive six miles down into the canyon. Go past the county park on the right and over the railroad tracks. The boathouse is a cinderblock building on the right. Park on the side of the road or in the parking lot south of the boathouse.
