Women's Tennis Battles Back To Post Opening-Day Win

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team posted a season-opening 4-3 win over Eastern Washington University at the Spokane Racquet Club Tuesday night.
The Zags (1-0) started off the night by posting wins in all three doubles matches then after dropping the first two singles matches played, won three of the final four singles matches to earn the victory. Senior Aglaya Kokurina opened her season with a win at number one singles. Freshmen Kristina Zauere, out of Latvia, earned her first career win with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number four singles and sophomore Clare Dodge posted her first win of the season by winning her number six singles to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
"It was nice to get this first win under our belts," said fifth year head coach D.J. Gurule. "We struggled a few times with our nerves early in the singles matches but they settled down and played well tonight. I was very pleased with how we played tonight."
Next up for the Bulldogs will be a trip to El Paso, Tex. for matches against Sam Houston State University, the University of Northern Colorado and UTEP Feb. 13-15.
