MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's team opened its West Coast Conference schedule with a 4-3 win over the University of Portland in Moraga, Calif. Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (9-5, 1-0 WCC) took the doubles point by winning the final two matches then went up 3-0 after sophomore Danielle Farmer and freshman Sophie Lantta each recorded wins in their number six and number five singles matches, respectively. Freshman Kristina Zauere later won her number three singles match to clinch the victory for the Zags.
"We played some good tennis today," said head coach D.J. Gurule. "I was very pleased with our efforts today. After taking the doubles point we carried the momentum over into our singles matches and continued to play well. Danielle (Farmer), Sophie (Lantta) and Kristina (Zauere) each played well throughout the day."
Gonzaga continues WCC play in Moraga, matching up against Loyola Marymount University Saturday and Saint Mary's College Sunday.
