Bulldog Novice 8+ Defeats Radcliffe In Tight Race

BOSTON, Mass. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing Novice 8+ had another superb day as it defeated Radcliffe on Sunday, the final day of the Charles River Challenge in Boston, Mass. The Novice 8+ finished the weekend winning two races and placing second in another.
The Novice 8+ victory was the lone win for Gonzaga on Sunday as the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ all finished third in their respective races.
The Gonzaga-Radcliffe Novice 8+ race was a battle of wills from start to finish. The finish was extremely close and tight, but the Bulldogs were able to pull out the victory just ahead of Radcliffe with a time of 7:35.4. Radcliffe crossed the finish line not a moment later at 7:35.5.
The Varsity 8+, racing its second ranked opponent of the weekend, placed third in its race with a time of 7:32.0. Radcliffe, ranked 16th in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing Top 20, won the 2,000-meter race in a time of 7:09.6. The University of Tennessee took second at 7:25.5.
The Varsity 4+ took third in its final race of the weekend, finishing with a time of 8:35.5. The Radcliffe A boat earned the victory with a finish of 8:12.9, while the Radcliffe B boat place second at 8:23.7. Tennessee rounded out the group, earning fourth place with a time of 8:56.5.
Gonzaga returns to action next weekend for both the West Coast Conference Championships and the WIRA Championships. The WCC Championships are slated for Friday, May 1 and the WIRA's are slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. Both Championships will be rowed at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
