Zags Second Varsity 8+ Takes Seventh At Pac-10 Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing Second Varsity 8+ placed seventh at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, while the Varsity 8+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats all claimed eighth place finishes at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
The Second Varsity 8+, who came into the championships having won its last three races, finished fourth in its morning elimination heat and went on to win the Petite Final by eight seconds to claim its seventh place finish. The Zags had a time of 6:59.20 to claim the fourth place finish it their heat race. GU's speed increased dramatically in the Petite Final, toppings its morning time by nearly eight seconds at 6:52.90. UCLA, the second place finisher, wasn't even close to Gonzaga as the Bruins clocked in at 7:01.00.
Stanford University won the Bulldogs heat race with a time of 6:37.40, followed by Washington State University (6:45.50) and USC (6:50.20); all claiming spots in the afternoon Grand Final. Stanford went on to finish second in the Grand Final with a time of 6:36.40, just behind the University of California, who claimed the gold with a time of 6:35.10.
In the Varsity 8+ heat race, Gonzaga was just seconds away from finishing third in its heat race, which would also have claimed the Zags a spot in the Grand Final. The Bulldogs, who were in last place going into the final 1,000-meters, turned on the jets, moving into fourth place with 500-meters left in the course. Behind Oregon State and USC by eight seconds going into the final 500-meters, Gonzaga continued to push hard, but ultimately could not overcome the Beavers or Trojans, finishing four seconds out of third place with a time of 6:44.20. Stanford won the race (6:22.90), followed by Oregon State (6:33.60), and USC (6:38.30).
The Zags finished second in the Petite Final to garner their eighth place finish. Gonzaga had a time of 6:44.00, just behind UCLA who won the race at 6:40.00. Stanford won the Grand Final and the gold trophy with a finish of 6:18.60.
The Bulldog Novice 8+ turned in an uncharacteristic last place finish in their morning heat race, crossing the finish line in 7:05.90. California (6:43.80), Washington (6:46.80) and USC (7:00.90) were the top three finishers and each earned a spot in the Grand Final. UC Davis took fourth at 7:01.80, followed by GU.
The Novice 8+ rebounded nicely in the Petite Final, pulling out a sub-7 minute finish to claim second place, and a eighth place finish overall, at 6:58.60, just one second behind the winner UC Davis (6:57.10). Washington was the overall winner, claiming a four-second victory in the Grand Final at 6:44.00.
The Varsity 4+ was the final boat to place eighth for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs finished fourth in their heat race at 7:54.80, behind winner Washington (7:31.20), second place Oregon State (7:32.60), and third place Stanford (7:34.70). The Zags went on to earn second, behind Washington State, in the Petite Final.
California won the Grand Final, finishing the course in 7.20.00.
