Zags Close Out Play At GU/EWU Fall Tournament

CHENEY, Wash. - Gonzaga University closed out GU/EWU Fall Tournament play with a couple more wins Sunday.
"I thought we did a great job this weekend," stated head coach D.J. Gurule. "I was very pleased to see how each player improved from last week's tournament."
The Bulldogs had the doubles pairing of Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer drop their Doubles Flight A Championship match to Idaho's Maria Perevoshchikova and Ulesanu Alexandra. The Zags top doubles team had posted three consecutive wins over the past two days to get to the bracket's final match.
Clare Dodge saw her impressive run in the Singles Flight C bracket come to an end Sunday, dropping her semifinal match in three sets to Washington State's Jackie Owens 0-6, 6-1, 6-2. Britta Stime also saw her run in the Singles Flight B bracket end on Sunday, falling in two sets to WSU's Marina Nichols. Stime finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.
Gabrielle Verspieren and Kristina Zauere later posted victories in their respective singles consolation round matches. The doubles team of Stime and Verspieren also added a win in their consolation match later in the afternoon.
"We ran into some tough draws today but are very excited with the number of players that produced some impressive wins this weekend," commented Gurule. "We are excited to get back to working on some things during the next few weeks and preparing for the St. Mary's classic in three weeks."
The Bulldogs have two tournaments remaining this fall, the first being the St. Mary's Classic in Moraga, Calif. Oct. 16-18 before closing out the fall season with the ITA Regionals held in Palo A lot, Calif. Oct. 23-25.
