SPOKANE, Wash. -
ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing programs open their 2010-11 season Saturday when they welcome Washington State University to the Gonzaga Boathouse near Upriver Dam for the Head of the Spokane. Racing begins at 9 a.m.
RACING FORMAT: As is the case with races at Upriver Dam, racing is done in flights with boats sent off the start line in intervals. Placing is determined by time after all boats in a class have crossed the finish line. Boats will be sent down the river at shorter intervals, resulting in less time between flights. The first flight begins at 9 a.m., with the last flight set to head down the river at 11:15 a.m.
LAST YEAR'S HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing squad won all three races at the 2009-10 Head of the Spokane. The Varsity 8+ defeated Washington State with a time of 16:15.0. The Coug Varsity 8+ finished in 16:19.0. In the Second Varsity 8+ the Bulldogs had a time of 16:52.0 and WSU finished at 17:15.0. The Novice 8+ A boat clocked in with the best time in their respective race, finishing at 16:49.0. The Bulldog women lost the Head of the Spokane to the Cougs in 2009-10. WSU's women's Varsity 8+ finished the 5,000-meter course in 17:38.0 with Gonzaga crossing the finish line at 18:27.0.
MEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "It is always great to get out for the first race of the year. Hopefully we will have good weather on Saturday."
WOMEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "We're looking to continue building on what we've been doing in practices. As the first race of the fall this is where we set our base and then continue to build on that in to the next three weekends. We are looking forward to having a home race and having the opportunity to show our family and friends what we work so hard for every day."
MEN'S ROWING NOVICE COACH MARK VOORHEES' THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "I'm excited to see what we can do on Saturday. The majority of our freshmen crews are walk-on guys who have only been on the water for five weeks. They've done a great job this fall and are picking up the basics really well. The races on Saturday will be a perfect opportunity to show what they've learned so far, as well as how competitive they can be."
WOMEN'S ROWING NOVICE COACH COURTNEY HAASE'S THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "This is a great group of athletes who will only continue to improve."
SUNDAY RACING: It's also Alumni Weekend and Fall Family Weekend at Gonzaga University and the Bulldogs will host Class Day Races at the Boathouse on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
