Zags Gain Experience Despite Loss To Washington State

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team lost the Head of the Spokane to Washington State University Saturday at Upriver Dam on the Spokane River. Despite the setback, head coach Melissa Flint was pleased with what she saw from all the Zag boats and looks forward to what another week of practice on the water will bring before facing the Cougars again next weekend.
"It was nice to get down the race course today," stated Flint after the race. "Now we have a week to make changes before we face Washington again, this time on their home course.
"The Novices had a successful day and it was great to see them get down the course for the first time. It will now be good to see what everybody can do in the upcoming weekends."
The Washington State Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ finished first and second on the 5,000-meter course in 17:01 and 17:21, respectively. The Bulldogs Varsity 8+, whose lineup was not determined until late Friday due to injuries, placed third, closing out the rainy course in 17:48.
The Head of Spokane is run in flights with placing determined by time in each flight, unlike the spring regattas which are true head-to-head.
The Bulldogs Second Novice 8+ earned the victory in its respective flight. They finished with a time of 19:46. The Cougar Novice 8+ had the second fastest time at 19:56, followed with GU's Novice 8+ at 1958.
Gonzaga returns to fall racing action Friday when it travels to Pullman, Wash., for the Head of the Snake hosted by Washington State on Wawawai Landing.
