PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing program put together another outstanding performance as it defeated Washington State University for the second-straight weekend, this time at the Head of the Snake, rowed at Snake River in Pullman, Wash.
"An outstanding job was done by all three varsity boats today," stated head coach Dan Gehn after the race. "It is always great to go to somebody's home course and shoot the lights out. Give credit to our coxswains who handled a tough, tough race course and its tight turns - they just nailed it."
The Bulldog Varsity 8+ won the first flight of the day, crossing the finish line of the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:15.07. The Cougar Varsity 8+ had the second fastest time down the river, clocking in at 16:35.10. The Gonzaga Second Varsity 8+, who had the same time as the WSU Varsity 8+ a week ago, finished just four seconds slower this time at 16:39.37.
The Head of the Snake race is a "head" format, which means the boats started at 15 second intervals, racing both the clock and each other.
In the first flight overall the Zags had five boats finish in the top eight. Finishing with the fifth fastest time was the Third Varsity 8+ at 17:24.14, followed by the Novice 8+ at 17:34.28. The Novice 8+ and Second Novice 8+, which had the eighth fastest time of the flight at 18:03.80, beat all three WSU novice boats.
In the third flight, the Gonzaga Varsity 4+ pulled out the victory with a time of 18:54.6. Washington State's Varsity 4+ was a step slower at 18:54.94.
Gonzaga closes out its fall racing next Sunday when it partakes in Head of the Lake, hosted by the University of Washington.
