SPOKANE, Wash. -
ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing squads close out their fall seasons when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for the 29th Annual Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday. First race is set to go at 8 a.m. on Montlake Cut. The Head of the Lake is co-hosted by the University of Washington and the Lake Washington Rowing Club.
HEAD OF THE LAKE: Racing for the Head of the Lake will begin at 8 a.m. The three mile regatta is the largest Fall regatta west of the Mississippi. The Head of the Lake starts on Lake Union, continues east through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington and finishes near the University of Washington's Conibear Shellhouse. This year's course is known as the "classic course" used most often in the regatta's 28-year history.
WHO THEY WILL BE RACING: Also competing at the Head of the Lake - besides Gonzaga University and the University of Washington - are Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University, The Evergreen State College, University of Oregon, Washington State University, British Columbia, Portland State University, Western Washington University, Pocock, and Lake Union.
LAST YEAR AT THE HEAD OF THE LAKE: Last year, the Gonzaga University women's rowing team ended the fall season with its best performance of fall. The Bulldogs earned a top three finish in two races and claimed sixth and seventh in another race. In the Varsity 8+ race, it was a battle between three Washington schools for the top spot. The University of Washington ultimately claimed the victory, crossing the finish line in 17:41.64. Washington State University was second at 17:49.64 and Gonzaga third with a time of 18:16.14. The Gonzaga University men's rowing team also closed out the 2009 fall with a strong showing at the Head of the Lake. The Bulldogs, who rowed in three races, earned a second place (3V8), third place (JV8) and sixth place (V8) finish.
MEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE LAKE: "We had another hard week of work. We are ready to do battle. We always like rowing at the Head of the Lake. We are excited to be able to take four 8's over, not sure if we have even been able to take four before."
WOMEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON HEAD OF THE LAKE: "We're looking forward to seeing if all the hard work we put in this week pays off. We've worked really hard on gaining seconds on our competition. We want to finish the fall racing season on a high note."
WOMEN'S ROWING NOVICE HEAD COACH Courtney Haase THOUGHTS ON HEAD OF THE LAKE: "Both boats (Third Varsity A and B) are very young and gaining valuable experience for the spring season. Based on practices this week, I expect them to race hard and have fun."
