FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Victoria Fallgren fired a final-round 72 Tuesday to finish tied for second at 217 and help Gonzaga University's women's golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
Sophomore Stephanie Corey also shot a final-round 72 over the 6,077-yard Copper River Country Club Course for a 54-hole score of 225 and a tie for 16th. Junior Sage Suffecool battled her way back after an opening-round 80 and finished at 232 for a tie for 38th following a 77 Tuesday.
The Bulldogs shot 299 Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 903. The Bulldogs caught and passed the two schools they were paired with in the tournament, fellow West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara University as well as UC Irvine, both of which finished at 905 and tied for fifth. UC Irvine is ranked 36th in the country.
UC Davis won the team title at 880, good for a 2-stroke victory over San Jose State University.
"It was tough, cold, windy and rainy," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said of Tuesday's conditions. "Victoria and Steph battled hard and we talked a lot about no matter what the weather did we were going to stick with our deal and we did. We had a good tournament. I'm happy to be playing that well right out of the shoot. We were dang near the best team on the course today which meant a lot of to us."
Only San Jose State, who the Bulldogs visit next week, had a better round Tuesday at 297. The 299 by the Bulldogs was their best round since a 297 in the Bulldog and Eagle Invitational to open the season last fall. Fallgren won that tournament in her collegiate debut.
Rickel said neither Fallgren or Corey had any amazing stretches or putts in their rounds, instead relying on steady play.
"Both just played really, really steady golf. We knew where to hit and did our best. When the elements got worse they stayed with the plan and they never made mistakes when the weather got bad," Rickel said.
Fallgren finished three shots behind medalist Cristina Corpus of SJSU, who had a final round 71. Fallgren defeated 36-hole leader Miki Ueoka of SCU by two strokes.
"Victoria taking second is a great thing for us," Rickel said. "Her 69 (Monday's opening round) inspired our team to let them know we were ready."
