SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's track season opened Saturday at the Dusty Lane Open hosted by Spokane Falls Community College, and the Bulldogs had some impressive early-season performances.
"We are drastically better than we were a year ago at this time," Gonzaga head coach Pat Tyson said. "We had some outstanding marks and I think we're headed in the right direction."
Among the highlights was freshman Tate Kelly's victory in the 5000 meters in 15:29.74 for a 5-second victory. Chris Boyle took third in 15:35.59 and Patrick Richie was fourth in 15:49.84.
Matt Bejar won Section 2 of the 1500 meter run in 4:12.43, edging teammate Lucas Rothenberg who was second in 4:13.51.
Luke Koch was a three-event competitor for the Bulldogs, taking third in both the 100 and 200 meters in 11.70 and 23.62, respectively. He also ran the third leg on the Bulldogs 4x400 meter relay as the Zags "B" took third in 3:37.59. Mitchell Fry ran the leadoff leg, Matt Gosselin the second leg and Noah Stout the final leg. Fry also ran the 100 and 200 meter races.
The Bulldog men also had a rare entrant in a field event, freshman Joel Betonte placing fourth in the long jump in 6.19m (23-3¾).
On the women's side, freshman Taylor Moravec had a busy day for the Bulldogs. She placed second in Section 2 of the 200m in 27.76, was fourth in Section 1 of the 400m in 63:50 and ran the first leg on the Bulldogs 4x400 meter relay team that finished second in 4:25.04. Sophomore Lindsay Drake ran the second leg and freshmen Darby Jenkins and Katie Jensen ran the final two legs.
Bulldog women took the second through eighth spots in the 5000 meters, Laura Volcheff leading the Bulldog contingent in 17:56.64 for second place. Brittany O'Regan was third in 18:08.63. A total of 13 Bulldogs competed in the event.
