WASHINGTON, D.C - With better water on the Potomac River for the second day of the George Washington Invitational Regatta, the Gonzaga University men's rowing team had a much more successful outing Saturday. The Bulldog Varsity 8+ won both its duals, while the Second Varsity 8+ had two solid performances, finishing second in their two respective races.
"The water was a lot better today," stated head coach Dan Gehn. "There still was a solid tailwind, but the water was much more rowable than it was yesterday."
The Varsity 8+ started its Saturday morning races off with a dual against the College of Holy Cross. The race was a barnburner from the start and, with the Crusaders leading nearing the final 100 meters; the Bulldogs pushed their way through and earned the .3 victory. Gonzaga finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:32.8, followed by Holy Cross with a time of 5:33.1.
The Varsity 8+ continued its winning ways in its afternoon dual against MIT, who like the Zags, received votes in the USRowing Top 20 this week. Gonzaga earned its second-straight down to the wire victory in a time of 5:44.1. MIT crossed the finish line a second later at 5:45.4.
"We had a nice solid lead over MIT going into the last 750-meters but were hit by a couple of big wakes," said Gehn about the afternoon win over MIT. "We composed ourselves and came back to win the race. It was a very good effort by the rowers and it was great to see them weed through adversity like that."
Gonzaga returns to action next Saturday, April 17th when it races Washington State University for the Fawley Cup on Snake River in Wawawai Landing, Wash. The Bulldogs look to win their 20th Fawley Cup in 21 years when they face off against the Cougars.
