Women's Rowing Varsity 8+ Places Second

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team began its two-day east coast trip placing second in the Varsity 8+ against both No. 7 Michigan State University and the University of Buffalo on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bulldogs Second Varsity 8+, Third Varity 8+ and Varsity 4+ all finished third on a day that saw perfect weather, nearly mid-70's all day and nice water.
The Zag Varsity 8+ of Emily Wilson, Chelsea Quilling, Alissa Stempson, Liz Moore, Teddie McGuire, Elise Perkins, Sam Cekovic, Chelsie Eddings and Sami Koppinger finished the course in 6:24.2, nine seconds behind first place Michigan State and nine seconds ahead of Buffalo.
The Spartans, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Top 20, won the race in 6:15.9. Buffalo had a time of 6:33.1
GU's Second Varsity 8+, Third Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ each claimed third with times of 7:07.1, 7:01.9 and 7:46.4, respectively.
The Spartans won all four races on the day. Along with its Varsity 8+ victory, MSU took first in the Second Varsity 8+ at 6:39.4, first in the Third Varsity 8+ in 6:52.4 and crossed the finish line in 7:24.3 in the Varsity 4+.
"Overall we learned some things about ourselves and racing today and are anticipating getting back on the course tomorrow to race Cornell and Syracuse," stated head coach Melissa Flint after the first day of racing. "The Varsity 8+ had a really good race today and we are hoping to build on that race tomorrow against both the Orange and the Big Red."
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday when they race Cornell University and Syracuse University.
