Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ Defeat Syracuse

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing squad closed out its final day of racing in Ithaca, N.Y. winning three races on Cayuga Lake. The Bulldogs, who rowed Cornell University in their morning racing and Syracuse University in their afternoon races, earned a victory in the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+.
The Zag Varsity 8+, who lost to Cornell by four seconds in their first outing of the day, rebounded with an impressive victory over Syracuse. Gonzaga had nearly a four second lead on the Orange when it caught a crab with 300 meters to go. The Bulldogs regrouped and still were able to grab a two second victory over Syracuse. GU finished with a time of 6:26.4 and Syracuse finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:28.3.
The Second Varsity 8+ also had a close race with the Orange in the afternoon. The Bulldogs, who like the Varsity 8+ fell to Cornell in their morning race, came out the victor with a time of 6:43.0. Syracuse finished at 6:43.1.
The Zags final victory of the day came in the Varsity 4+ race against Syracuse. Gonzaga claimed an impressive eight second win over the Orange at 7:41.7. Syracuse came in second at 7:49.1 and the University of Buffalo was third at 7:55.3.
"We learned a lot from our weekend out here," stated head coach Melissa Flint as she and her team were heading back to the hotel. "We ended on a higher note and now have three weeks off. We need to stay focus on our home race with Washington State and Western Washington in late April."
