Drew Cowens Named Assistant Women's Rowing Coach

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's rowing head coach Melissa Flint has announced the hiring of Drew Cowens as an assistant coach on the Bulldog staff. Cowens' comes to Gonzaga after serving as the women's rowing intern coach at the University of Iowa last season.
"I'm excited about having Drew as a member of our coaching staff," stated Flint. "He will be a great fit within our program and the athletic department. He brings a level of commitment that will help make our program better, along with a strong work ethic and love for the sport."
As the intern coach at Iowa, Cowens assisted in coaching the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. He also handled on-campus recruiting and assisted with the budgeting and the fiscal management process along with travel logistics.
"I am very excited to join the Gonzaga family," Cowens said. "The team has ambitious goals this year and I can't wait to be a part of the successes I know our student-athletes will have on and off the water."
Cowens previously served as the freshman coach and operations coordinator for the men's rowing program at UCLA. While at UCLA, he coordinated schedules and training plans, and maintained equipment. As an operations coordinator, Cowens created alumni mailings and followed up on all aspects of fundraising campaigns.
From 2006 to 2007, Cowens was the varsity lightweight boys' coach at Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center.
Cowens rowed for UCLA from 2001-05 and was the stroke seat of the first UCLA men's team in over a decade to make the grand final of the Pacific-10 Championships.
He studied American Literature and Culture at UCLA from 2001-05. He received his Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Washington in 2008 and earned his Masters of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership from Washington in 2010.
