Bulldogs Open Dual Season With Win Over Seattle

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened its 2011 schedule with a 6-0 win over Seattle University Sunday at the Spokane Racquet Club.
The Bulldogs (1-0) claimed the match's doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Seniors Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer took an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles while senior Clare Dodge and junior Kristina Zauere picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match with senior Jackie Tabb and junior Sophie Lantta against Gabriella Weissmann and Sarah Lucas was shortened to accommodate Seattle's (1-4) travel arrangements.
The Bulldogs were also impressive in singles play. Mehndiratta, Teitzel and Lantta won their matches in two sets. Although they lost the first set in their matches, Zauere and Dodge bounced back and won the final two to claim points at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. The match between sophomore Britta Stime and Corinne Wurden was unfinished.
"It was great to get this win under our belts," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We had a little bit of nerves starting out, but I was impressed with our ability to settle down and get the win. I have to give a lot of credit to Seattle U. They had a very long weekend but they gave us a battle. I am looking forward to our match against Eastern Washington on Wednesday."
The match against the Eagles is at 6 p.m. at the Spokane Racquet Club.
