Men's Rowing Has Mixed Results At UCSD/USD Regatta

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team began its 2011 season with mixed results Friday. The Bulldogs, opening the season for the second consecutive year at the UC San Diego/San Diego Regatta, took first in an exciting Freshman 8+ race and placed second in the Junior Varsity 8+ race but came in third in the marquee Varsity 8+ battle.
"UC San Diego and San Diego Varsity boats rowed very well," explained head coach Dan Gehn after the regatta. "We did everything wrong this morning, from steering to rhythm."
UC San Diego won the Varsity 8+ 2,000-meter race in a time of 6:21.86. San Diego came in second at 6:28.34, followed nearly two second later by the Bulldogs, who crossed the finish line at 6:30.95.
"Despite the outcome, it was good to get the first race of the season out of the way," stated Gehn.
The Zag Junior Varsity 8+ boat had a good first outing of the spring, falling to UC San Diego by just 2.8 seconds.
"The Junior Varsity boat raced tough," said Gehn. "It had a slow start but showed their strength by catching up to UC San Diego in the middle. But it ultimately lost momentum in the last 500-meters."
UC San Diego won with a time of 6:19.23. Gonzaga finished the course in a time of 6:22.05, followed by UC San Diego's Third Varsity 8+ boat at 6:41.6.
The most exciting and exhilarating race of the day was the final race of the morning, featuring the Freshman 8+.
"I am extremely excited for the Freshman 8+, who won its race by a deck," explained Gehn. "UC San Diego led by a length the first 1,000-meter but we came back to lead by two seats. The see-saw battle continued with UCSD going up again by a half a length but we ran through them at the end to win by a deck."
The Bulldog Freshman 8+ had the winning time of 6:26.9. The Tritons finished in 6:27.3.
Gonzaga continues its spring season with its first home regatta a week from Sunday when it hosts Oregon State University. The race is currently set for Silver Lake in Medical Lake, but the venue could change due to weather in Spokane.
