LAST TIME VERSUS OREGON STATE: The Gonzaga University women's rowing dual at Oregon State University in 2010 was delayed several hours due to weather conditions on Dexter Reservoir, but once the Bulldogs got out on the water they had a strong showing. The Zags won the marquee Varsity 8+ race over the then-No. 15 ranked Beavers squad, but OSU captured victories in the Novice 8+, Junior Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 4+. The Bulldogs won the Varsity 8+ in 7:11.2 for a 3-second victory over the Beavers, who were timed in 7:14.51.
HEAD COACH MELISSA FLINT'S TIES TO OREGON STATE: Fourth-year head coach Melissa Flint has a pretty good understanding of the Oregon State University women's rowing program. A four-year membe of the Beaver rowing team from 1998-08, Fling was a 3-year varsity rower and captain of the 2002 squad that finished third at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships. Following her collegiate career, Flint remained at OSU as a volunteer coach for the 2003 season working primarily with the women's novice team.
WHO THE VARSITY BOAT RETURNS: The 2011 Gonzaga University women's rowing Varsity 8+ will have just two rowers in its Varsity 8+ boat this Sunday that rowed in the Varsity 8+ boat a season ago. The two returning members to the top boat are Chelsea Quilling and Sami Koppinger. Quilling is a junior and Koppinger is a senior.
MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON OPENING THE SEASON: "We're really looking forward to our first race. We made some great strides on the water last week and are excited to see how that transfers to race day. We've been battling a lot of injuries and adversity and I'm hoping we can push past that and just compete."
NOVICE COACH COURTNEY HAASE'S THOUGHTS ON OPENING THE SEASON: "The novice team is looking forward to the challenge of racing. After training hard all winter we want to carry our strength and fitness into the boat. Sunday will be a great test for everyone on the team."
