Women's Rowing Has Mixed Results Against Oregon State

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team had a rough time on the water Sunday morning in its opening dual of the 2011 season. The Bulldogs, racing Oregon State University, won one of five races, held on Silver Lake in Medical Lake Wash.
"We went out and competed today and fought hard," stated head coach Melissa Flint. "Unfortunately the results don't show that."
The lone victory for the Zags was in the Second Novice 8+. Racing the final race of the morning, Gonzaga battled the heavy headwind to claim a six-second victory over Oregon State. The Bulldogs finished the 2,000-meter course in 8:19.10 with the Beavers crossing the finish line at 8:25.59.
"It was a nice way to end the day," said Flint.
In the first race of the morning, the Gonzaga Varsity 8+ started off strong against Oregon State but faltered down the stretch.
"We were extremely close in the first half of the race," explained Flint. "They pulled together and did a solid job dealing with the weather conditions."
Gonzaga returns to action next Saturday hosting Washington State University on Silver Lake.
