LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head women's golf coach Brad Rickel got exactly what he wanted out of Sunday's Gonzaga Spring Individual golf tournament at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
"We wanted 36 holes of competition on a good course to get us ready for next week," Rickel said. "And I think we got that."
For the record, Darcie Richmond of the University of Washington captured medalist honors with a 73-71 for a 4-over par 144. Gonzaga's Victoria Fallgren and UW's Kelli Bowers tied for second at 146, Fallgren with rounds of 70-76 and Bowers with 74-72. Fallgren and Bowers were the leaders in the clubhouse until Richmond finished and posted her 71. Fallgren's even-par first-round 70 was the best score of the day over the 6,064-yard layout.
The Bulldogs got a fourth-place finish from Jessica Howe at 147 with rounds of 73-74, Sage Suffecool was in a two-way tie for fifth at 150 after rounds of 76-74 and Stephanie Corey was in a two-way tie for seventh at 151, recovering from an opening-round 78 to shot a second-round 73.
Brittany Tallman of Washington recorded her first career hole-in-one when she aced the 159-yard par 3 in the first round.
No team scores were kept.
The next competition for the Bulldogs will be next Monday and Tuesday in the West Coast Conference Championship at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif. Rickel said he's pretty certain of his lineup but will wait until early in the week to announce his five-person team.
"Naturally we're going down to try and win, but if Pepperdine plays to its potential they will be tough to beat," Rickel said. "After that it's a fist-fight for second."
