HISTORY OF THE FAWLEY CUP: Gonzaga University men's rowing has won 20 out of the last 22 Fawley Cup's. The Fawley Cup is awarded to the annual winner of the Varsity 8+ race between Gonzaga and Washington State University. The 2010 Fawley Cup was a contested battle. The two boats were never separated by more than a half a length. The Zags and Cougs were even at the 500-meter mark and then WSU took a half a length lead over the next 500-meters. Gonzaga gained the lead slightly, but Washington State again took control and GU backed away. But with 700-meters to go, the Zags made their move and started to get closer. The Bulldogs continued to press in the final 500-meters and with just 200-meters left the visiting Zags took over and crossed the finish line first for the victory. Gonzaga had a winning time of 5:58.2, while Washington State had a time of 5:59.64.
FALL RESULTS VERSUS WASHINGTON STATE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing program faced Washington State University three times this past fall and won each race. The Bulldogs opened the fall season capturing the featured Varsity 8+ race at the Head of the Spokane in a race course record time of 15:25. The Cougar Varsity 8+ and the Gonzaga Second Varsity 8+ each finished the 5000-meter course 26 seconds later in 15:51. GU's fasted time at the Head of the Spokane before its 15:25 finish was 15:37, earned Oct. 21. 2006. The Bulldogs continued their outstanding fall defeating Washington State at the Head of the Snake. The Zag Varsity 8+ won the first flight of the regatta, crossing the finish line in a time of 16:15.07. The Cougar Varsity 8+ had the second fastest time down the river, finishing in 16:35.10. In their final race of the fall, Gonzaga placed fourth at the Head of the Lake, one spot ahead of Washington State.
