SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After winning eight of its 10 remaining matches of the regular season, the Gonzaga University women's tennis team will take its momentum to the West Coast Conference Championships this weekend at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
The Bulldogs (10-10) are seeded fifth in the championships, the highest seeding under seven-year head coach D.J. Gurule. They will face No. 4 seed and 57th-ranked Santa Clara University Thursday at 8 a.m. Pending on the result, the Bulldogs will face the winner or loser of top seed and 27th-ranked University of San Diego or No. 8 seed University of San Francisco either 8 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Six Bulldogs enter the WCC Championships having posted 10 or more singles wins in the 2010-11 season. Senior Rika Mehndiratta and Redshirt sophomore Prue Teitzel both pace the Bulldogs with 14 wins, senior Clare Dodge and junior Kristina Zauere each have posted 13 victories while senior Jackie Tabb and junior Sophie Lantta have 11 wins.
Tabb enters the tournament on a six-match winning streak and has won seven of her last eight. Mehndiratta is also on a roll, having won five of her last seven matches at court No. 1. She is one win away from posting her third consecutive 10-win spring season.
Tabb's singles momentum has also carried into doubles with Lantta. Together, they have won six of their last seven matches and are two wins away from posting a 10-win spring season. Mehndiratta and senior Danielle Farmer, who have played all but two at the No. 1 position, are two shy from posting a 10-win season in their final year.
"We are confident and are playing good tennis right now heading into the tournament," Gurule said. "Our team has worked hard all year and our seniors are focused a lot on ending their career on a positive note."
