Zags Win Doubles Point But Drop WCC Championship Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 5 seed Gonzaga University women's tennis team won the doubles point but couldn't carry the momentum into singles play as No. 4 seed and 57th-ranked Santa Clara University rallied and defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 on the first day of the West Coast Conference Championships Thursday.
The Bulldogs will face No. 8 seed University of San Francisco in the consolation bracket Friday at 8 a.m. The Dons lost a 4-0 decision to top seed and 27th-ranked University of San Diego earlier. Friday's match will be the first meeting of the season between the two WCC schools.
Seniors Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer got the Zags started with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to post their ninth win of the season. Senior Clare Dodge and junior Kristina Zauere played to a tough battle at court No. 2. They secured the doubles point for the Bulldogs with a 9-8 (5) win, posting their team-leading 16th win together.
