Junior Varsity 8+ Defeats George Washington Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team struggled on the first day of the 24th annual George Washington Invitational. The Bulldogs, rowing one team currently ranked in the USRowing Collegiate Top 20 and another who is receiving votes, won one race Saturday.
The Zags, racing on the Potomac River, claimed their lone victory of the day in the Junior Varsity 8+ race in the afternoon session. Gonzaga defeated George Washington by four seconds, finishing the course in 6:01.8. The Colonials crossed the finish line in 6:05.9.
The Gonzaga Varsity 8+ stumbled in its opening race against Cornell University, ranked eighth in the USRowing Collegiate Top 20, and Brock University, a school out of Canada. Cornell won the race with a time of 5:55.8 and Brock took second at 6:02.5. The Bulldogs claimed third with a finish of 6:12.5.
The Zag Varsity 8+ rebounded with a sub-six minute finish and close four-second loss to George Washington, who is the first team also receiving votes in the top 20 poll, in their afternoon race. Gonzaga had a time of 5:59.9, just behind the Colonials who won at 5:55.9.
Gonzaga closes the invitational out Sunday rowing both Georgetown and Holy Cross. The Freshman 8+ boat will start the day with its race against the two schools starting at 10:36 a.m. The Junior Varsity 8+ race is set for 10:52 a.m. and the Varsity 8+ closes out the day with its race at 11:08 a.m. (All times listed are Eastern).
