DEXTER LAKE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing team opened the 2012 spring season at the Oregon State University dual Saturday. The Bulldogs, rowing on Dexter Lake in Oregon, won one of six races but the overall performance was successful.

"I thought the crews performed to their capabilities today and are pleased with the performance," explained head coach Glenn Putyrae. "Obviously, we would have like a different result, but Oregon State is a great crew and we look forward to seeing them again in two weeks in San Diego."

The lone victory of the morning came in Second Varsity 4+. The Bulldogs closed the 2,000-meter course in a time of 8:08.25. The Beavers finished the course at 8:17.13.

"Special mention should be given to coxswains Lindsey Kranz of the Second Varsity 4+ and Jen Hill, of the Novice 8+, who both had great performances in their first-ever 2,000-meter race," stated Putyrae after the event.

In the marquee Varsity 8+ race, the Beavers earned an 11-second victory over the Zags with a time of 6:48.70. Gonzaga finished under seven minutes at 6:59.77.

The Bulldog Second Varsity 8+ also closed out their race under seven minutes at 6:58.84. Oregon State crossed the finish line six seconds prior to Gonzaga at 6:52.15.

In the Novice 8+ race, Oregon State earned the victory in a time of 7:11.5. Gonzaga would finish at 7:22.6.

"The novice 8+ rowed well today," explained Novice coach Drew Cowens. "They showed their youth by going off the line a little higher than planned, but managed to finish well against a good opponent."

Gonzaga will next row on Saturday, March 31. Some of the team will head to Seattle for the Husky Open, while the others will head to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego Crew Classic.
