SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's tennis senior Kristina Zauere and freshman Katie Edwards took home All-West Coast Conference honorable mention accolades as voted by the league coaches Wednesday. Zauere received an honorable mention in singles and in doubles with Edwards.
While this is Zauere's her first All-WCC honorable mention award in singles play, it is her doubles honorable mention accolade in her career as a Zag. She received the school's inaugural All-WCC doubles honorable mention accolade as a freshman with Aglaya Kokurina.
Zauere finished her senior season second on the team with nine singles wins in the spring season, six coming from the No. 3 slot. Zauere also clinched the one of the back draw titles at the Eastern Washington University Fall Classic during the fall season.
Ever since being paired up for the first time at the EWU Fall Classic this past fall, Edwards and Zauere proved to be a good veteran-rookie combo as the two posted a team-best 10 wins throughout the 2011-12 year. Seven of those wins came from the No. 1 slot during the dual season.
"I'm really proud of Kristina and Katie, they definitely earned it," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "They did a fantastic job all year of playing at No. 1 doubles and have had success in the conference. I think Kristina's singles award was really a testament to her career here at Gonzaga. She is truly a fighter and I think the (WCC) coaches saw that and rewarded her."
The 2012 all-conference first team was selected by the conference coaches, based on overall season performance. All-WCC Second Team members were chosen based on the same criteria, plus performance at the recent WCC Championships.
