Women's Tennis Finishes Strong At WSU Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - On the last day of the WSU Cougar Classic, the Gonzaga University women's team made its biggest impression on the court yet.
Gonzaga picked up six victories Sunday and the team only competed in singles play.
"Overall, this weekend really helped us gain much needed match play experience," ninth-year head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Britta Stime, Taurie Bjerken, Alexandra Tallas, Sandy Dennett and Melanie Yates all had solid wins for us."
Stime took down Alyssa Nagai from Eastern Washington University 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation bracket of the second flight. Both Tallas and Yates victories also came in the second flight consolation, with Tallas handling Ryann Werner from Eastern Washington 6-2, 7-6, (7-3) and Yates beating Lewis-Clark State College's Bryn Oliviera 6-1, 6-2.
It was Katie Edwards who picked up the only win in the flight one consolation for the Zags, beating Heather Davidson 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) from the University of Montana.
"Katie had another great win today," Gurule commented. "I was really impressed with her play all weekend."
Rounding the weekend out for the Zags was Dennett and Bjerken both winning their flight three consolation bracket. Dennett defeated Brittany Ellingsen 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) from Eastern Washington and Bjerken beat Loreto Ramos from Lewis-Clark State.
Gurule liked what he saw from his team over the weekend but he is also aware that there is always room for improvement before they host the GU Hidden Duel beginning Sept. 28.
"We definitely have some things to work on in practice," Gurule reflected. "I would like to see a little more consistency and we have to get better in doubles. I am looking forward to working hard the next two weeks before our next event."
