Weather Plays Havoc With Rose City Collegiate Women's Golf

AURORA, Ore. - Record rainfall in the Portland area definitely played havoc with the Rose City Intercollegiate golf tournament Sunday and Monday.
With 6-plus inches of rain falling in Portland and most of it coming over the weekend, Sunday's practice rounds were washed out and Monday's scheduled 36-holes was reduced to a single round of 18 at a soggy Langdon Farms Golf Club. Monday's play didn't start until 11:30 a.m., thus making 36 holes impossible the shorter days, and teams cannot play 36 holes Tuesday because of travel commitments.
The tournament will now be a 36-hole affair with the final round Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. with tee times on No. 1 and No. 10.
Despite the weather-invoked disruption in the format, Gonzaga University still finds itself tied for second at 299 with UC Irvine. Oregon State University holds a 6-stroke lead at 293.
Bulldog freshman Ciera Min is tied for fourth at 1-over par 73, sophomore Raychelle Santos is tied for seventh one more stroke back, senior Tai Jade 'TJ' Kliebphipat is tied for 10th after a 75, junior Alice Kim is tied for 24th with a 77 and junior Han Wu is tied for 34th at 78. Sophomore Angela DeVilla, playing as an individual, is tied for 34th at 78 over the 6,080-yard, par 72 layout.
Anica Yoo of OSU is the individual leader at 3-under par 69.
"It's been a trying couple of days," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel admitted. "There was no practice round because the course was closed."
But despite being thrown out of their normal routine, Rickel said his squad responded.
"I'm proud of how this team conducted their business. The conditions were tough with wind and rain, and the course was completely mush."
While Kliebphipat, Kim and Wu had played the course in 2011 when the Zags were last in the field, Santos and Min were getting their first look at the layout and "played great rounds on a course they had never seen before," Rickel said. "TJ and Alice both had good rounds but dropped a couple of shots in the final holes."
Min played the course in 36-37, Santos 37-37, Kliebphipat shot 35-40, Kim 39-38 and Wu 38-40.
Gonzaga is looking for its first win of the season after runner-up finishes in the first two outings of the fall at the Hobble Creek Invitational hosted by BYU and the Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State University.
"We need to have a little better short game Tuesday if we want to move up," Rickel said.
