Rowing In Seattle For Head of the Lake Regatta

SPOKANE, Wash. -
ON TAP: Gonzaga University's men's and women's rowing teams will partake in the Head of the Lake Regatta hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club Sunday in Seattle, Wash. The 3.1 mile begins at 8 a.m.; starting in Lake Union, continuing through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut before finishing in Lake Washington. The Head of the Lake will be the final fall regatta for the women's squad, while the Bulldog men have one event after Sunday.
WHO IS ROWING: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team will race third boats on Sunday. The Zags Varsity 8+ will race at 8 a.m. in the Men's Collegiate/Open 8, while the Junior Varsity 8+ races at 8:03 a.m. in the Men's Collegiate Junior Varsity 8+ and the Third Varsity 8+ rows at 8:13 a.m. in the Men's Third Varsity 8+. The women's rowing squad will race four boats. The Varsity 8+ will participate in the CHAMP Women's 8+ at 8:06 a.m., the Junior Varsity 8+ will row at 8:09 a.m. in the Women's Collegiate Junior Varsity 8+ and the Third Varsity 8+ A and B boats will close out the racing at 8:17 in the Women's Collegiate Third Varsity 8+. WOMEN RETURN TO HEAD OF THE LAKE FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2010: The Gonzaga University women's rowing program returns to the Head of the Lake for the first time since 2010. At the event in 2010, the Bulldogs placed third in the marquee Varsity 8+ race, placed fourth in the Junior Varsity 8+ race and took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Third Varsity 8+ race.
GONZAGA MEN HAD SUCCESSFUL OUTING AT 2012 HEAD OF THE LAKE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team closed out its fall season in 2012 with an extremely successful outing at the Head of the Lake Regatta. The Bulldogs raced in three events with the Third Varsity 8+ winning its race, the Junior Varsity 8+ placing third in its event and the Varsity 8+ claiming fourth in the marquee race.

MEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE LAKE: "We have some great starting positions this year, those are based off our finish from last year's race, with the varsity eight staring second, junior varsity going third and third varsity leading off. I think the guys had a great week of practice and are ready to compete."
WOMEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE'S THOUGTS ON THE UPCOMING HEAD OF THE LAKE: "We are looking forward to competing in our last race of the fall. We have been pleased with the progress we have made this fall and we are looking forward to see where we stack up against UW, Stanford, WSU, Portland and the other competitors. Washington raced last weekend at the Head of the American in Sacramento and won the eight so we know they are fast. Anytime you get a chance to do a time trial against quality competition you learn something about where you are and how far you have to go. This weekend provides our rowers another opportunity to get information that will be valuable heading into winter training."
