Sping Break Blog: Training Winding Down In Sacramento

The Gonzaga University women's rowing team headed to Sacramento, Calif., for the week of spring break. The Bulldogs will document this week with a daily blog that will give insight into their training, their first race of the year - against Loyola Marymount University of Friday, and a scrimmage with UCLA Saturday. The Zags will be training and racing on Lake Natoma, which also is home to both the West Coast Conference Championship and the WIRA Championships.
Today's blog is written by Gonzaga freshman Laura Brasch.
There's nothing like a nice burn to remind you that we are in Sacramento!
As the end of our trip nears, the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four headed to Los Angeles to battle both LMU and UCLA. As always, their plan is simple: complete and total domination. With all the hard work we have been doing this week, this goal is easily within reach. So here's a quick shout to the team in LA; let's get it done.
As the days roll by and the pain gets worse, we are reminded of how truly lucky we are to be here. On a serious note, the girls on this team are putting everything they have into this crucial time on the water. From my perspective, as coxswain of the novice eight, I find myself wondering- will the pieces ever stop? Am I counting to ten correctly? Am I going to hit that boat? Most of the time, I am spot on with the counting. Half of the time, I avoid the other boat. Not everyone is perfect.
Spring break has become a time for team bonding and just a little bit of laughter. As always, we don't have time for much fun, but we manage to keep our spirits high just like our rate. During our scrimmage against Portland on Wednesday we were able to get a good idea about where we stand as we venture forth in our racing season. Personally, I predict some strong finishes!
This week is all about mastering technique, finding our rhythm, and pulling in strong. To the coaching staff, thanks for making this trip something we will never forget. To my fellow rowers, I look forward to a successful season.
