Bulldogs Take Big Strides In Dual With Oregon State

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's rowing head coach Glenn Putyrae was pleased with the progress and strides his squad made from last week's opening weekend to Sunday's home dual with Oregon State University. The Bulldogs weren't able to capture a victory over the Beavers, but Putyrae believed the continual steps to improving were more important than victories as this point in the season.
"Today was a step in the right direction," explained Putyrae. "Last week we weren't ready to race and our results definitely showed we weren't prepared to do the things we needed to do to get in the race and then compete. Today we did a much better job of getting into the race and competing all the way down. We weren't faster than Oregon State but it was certainly a more competitive experience for the athletes than it was a week ago. We just now need to keep getting faster."
The Varsity 8+ race was a battle all the way down the 2,000-meter race course of Silver Lake. The two boats were neck-and-neck at the 1,000-meter mark and Oregon State held a slight lead down the final 500-meters. In the end, the Beavers captured the four-second victory over the Bulldogs with a time of 7:06.95. Gonzaga had a time of 7:10.63.
The Second Varsity 8+ race was just as tight with OSU squeaking out a two-second win at 7:11.30. GU had a time of 7:13.50.
After having a great race against Loyola Marymount last Friday, the Varsity 4+ boat struggled a tad against Oregon State. The Beavers A and B boats grabbed first and second place with times of 8:04.17 and 8:07.60, respectively. Gonzaga closed the course in a time of 8:29.30.
Gonzaga did cross the finish line first in the Fourth Varsity 8+/Second Novice 8+ race. The Bulldogs - the Fourth Varsity 8+ boat - clocked a time of 7:33.09, while the Beavers - the Second Novice 8+ boat - finished in 7:41.29.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to their dual with Washington State University which is set for Saturday, March 30. The event will take place in Pullman, Wash.
