Ogden, Idaho - Gonzaga University won five of its singles matches in a come from behind victory over Weber State University 5-2 at the Ogden Athletic Club Sunday.
"I truly am proud of our guys today," Head coach Peter MacDonald said. "We were in a tough position and down for most of the match. We hit a spark and came back and never backed down. The team played some inspired tennis."
The Bulldogs fell in an early hole against the Wildcats by losing the doubles point. Weber State took all three doubles matches.
"Weber State is a tough team," MacDonald said. "We needed to play some excellent tennis to comeback and that is what we did."
Gonzaga left its mark in singles. Two Bulldogs won their matches in straight sets.
No. 1 player Alvaro Nazal downed Jakub Gewert 6-3, 6-2; and No. 2 Olivier Jamin defeated Todd Fought 7-5, 7-5.
Levin Guillermo, No. 3 player, won his first set, dropped the second before pulling away in the third. His win was over Oliver Good 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
The inspiring comeback performances came from freshmen Vicente Varas and Hayden Smith.
"Both Hayden and Vicente lost their first set," MacDonald explained. "It is hard enough to win a tennis match but going down a set and a break in the second is very tough. These guys both just worked hard, executed and fought. I was really impressed how they overcame obstacles in their matches."
Varas' comeback was over Ben Rode with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Smith overcame Caio Poitena 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.
"This was a good win and the team showed what it is capable of," MacDonald said.
Gonzaga does not have another match until Mar. 14 when it travels to UC Irvine for a 1 p.m. contest.
