SPOKANE, Wash. - The position might be new, but there's a familiar person in the role of graduate assistant women's golf coach.
Victoria Fallgren, who completed her eligibility two weeks ago at the NCAA Central Regional, has been hired by head women's golf coach Brad Rickel to assume the new role.
"The biggest thing she brings is she fully understands how we operate our program. She is a Zag through and through and has a passion for the university and our golf program. It's going to translate straight into what she is doing for us," Rickel said of the opportunity to have Fallgren in the position.
Fallgren also jumped at the chance to remain involved with Gonzaga women's golf.
"I think it's an excellent opportunity to give back to the school that's given me so much. The team has made so many leaps and bounds the last couple of years, but I think there's still a lot of work to be done and a lot of goals we want to achieve. I desperately want to be a part of that," Fallgren said.
One of the biggest impacts Rickel sees Fallgren having is in recruiting.
"I hope she will be the head of our recruiting, open new avenues for us. I'm really excited about what she will bring to the table recruiting wise. I'm very thrilled about her being part of the team."
Fallgren, who won WCC Championship medalist honors in 2012 as a junior and finished sixth this season, said she is anxious to hit the recruiting trail.
"I'm looking to utilize the contacts I gained working with the junior tour last year," the native of Lakewood, Calif., said.
Fallgren finished the 2013 season with a 74.59 stroke average with seven Top 10 finishes. Her career stroke average is 75.92 with two career tournament victories, 10 Top 5 finishes and 18 Top 10 placings. The Zags finished second in the WCC Championship in 2011 and 2013, the former marking the first time in WCC Championship history a team other than Pepperdine University or the University of San Francisco finished in the top two. Gonzaga finished third in 2012.
The Zags also earned their inaugural trip to the NCAA Regional this season, selected to an at-large berth in the Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla.
