Women's Tennis Holds Strong In Minnesota

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened the first day of the University of Minnesota Gopher Invitational with five impressive singles and two doubles victories.
The day began with doubles where GU would only drop one contest.
In the Maroon Flight, Kylie Peek and partner Samantha Polayes cruised over Talisa Merchiers and Lydia Green (Iowa State University) to the tune of 8-1. The other Bulldog win came in the Gopher Flight with the German duo of Isabell Klingert and Franziska Koehler handling Michelle Elkin and Nina Barudzic (University of South Dakota) 8-5.
Fresh off her victory, Klingert went on to win both of her singles matches. Competing in the Maroon Singled Flight, Klingert downed Emma Waites (Iowa State) 6-2, 6-1; and followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 domination of Pernilla Wohlstrom (University of Wisconsin). Her next match is against Daphne Friedrichs (Eastern Michigan University) Saturday.
Also in the Maroon Flight is Koehler and Melanie Yates. Koehler took home a win over Ana Gasparaovic (Iowa State) 6-3, 6-3; before falling in her second contest 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (3) to Kelsey Frechette (Minnesota). Yates challenged in her opening match but dropped 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (8).
Edwards is the lone Zag competing in the "M" Flight. After an opening round defeat 6-3, 6-0; the Bulldogs No. 1 player from a year ago responded to beat Tereza Brichacova (South Dakota State University) 6-4, 6-3.
Both Polayes and Peek went 1-1 in the "U" Flight. Polayes opened with a win over Lacy Sprinkel (University of North Dakota) 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4) but would fall 6-3, 6-2 to Paula Rincon Otero (Minnesota). Peek started with troublesome defeat but returned to form and captured a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Dragana Brankovic (South Dakota).
Gonzaga will have plenty of opportunities at the Gopher Invitational all weekend. Action is set to resume Saturday morning.
