Rowing At Head Of The Pend Oreille Saturday

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams begin their 2013-14 campaigns Saturday at the Head of the Pend Oreille, hosted by the Priest River Yacht Club on the Pend Oreille River in Priest River, Idaho. For the men's team, the event is an intrasquad scrimmage.
ABOUT THE PEND OREILLE REGATA: This is the third-annual Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta and the only rowing competition in the state of Idaho. The regatta is a time-trial competition, in which teams will race the clock.
WHO IS RACING AT THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE: Gonzaga will compete in the 5K race, open to all classes of rowers. The women's will race Washington State University. Also racing is Nelson RC, Coeur d'Alene RC, Spokane River RA, Tri-Cities Boat Club, Nelson Rowing Club Juniors, Pend Oreille Rowing and Paddling Association. The men's team will race other Bulldog boats.
RACING SCHEDULE:
10 a.m.: Men's Varsity 8+
10:10 a.m.: Women's Varsity 8+
11 a.m.: Women's Varsity 4+
Noon: Men's Varsity 8+
DIRECTIONS: Priest River is located 5 miles east of the Washington/Idaho border on Highway 2. Spectators should proceed to Bonner Park West for viewing. To access Bonner Park West, turn right off of Highway 2 onto Wisconsin Ave., cross the railroad track and turn left just before the Merritt Bros. Bridge. Parking is available at Bonner Park West.
MEN'S HEAD COACH DAN GEHN ON THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE REGATTA: "This is always a great race to start off our year. The course, the people and the community of Priest River are wonderful hosts and it's right in our backyard. Even though this is an exhibition for us we will get down the course with everyone twice. The team hasn't been on the water long this fall but I am expecting they will attack this with the same high energy we had at the start of school. We are very excited about our incoming class, losing 10 seniors last year to graduation means they will be involved at every level of our program"
WOMEN'S HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE ON THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE REGATTA: "We are really excited; for the third-straight year we are starting our racing season at the Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta in Priest River, Idaho. The folks up there always put on a great event and it is always a lot of fun to compete against our competition from Washington State. We know our student-athletes put in a lot of work in this summer and we are excited to see how they apply what they've done in a race situation."
