Strong Start For Kylie Peek At WSU Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Kylie Peek won both her matches and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Crimson Singles Draw at the Washington State University Cougar Classic Friday.
The Park City, Utah, native will face top seed Elizaveta Luzina Saturday after downing Kelli Woodman (Seattle University) 6-3, 6-2; and Megan LaLone (Boise State University) 6-2, 6-0; today.
Samantha Polayes was the lone other Bulldog in the Crimson Draw to pick up an opening round victory. She downed Barbara Carey (Seattle) 6-4, 6-2. However, Polayes would fall in her second match to Vicky Lozano (University of Idaho) 6-4, 6-4. The defeat puts Polayes in the consolation draw where she will face Anna Lambert (Seattle) Saturday.
Katie Edwards and Isabell Klinget both suffered opening round defeats. Both went into the consolation draw where Edwards had a bye and Klingert beat Corinne Wurden (Seattle) 6-1, 7-5; to stay alive.
Franziska Koehler won her first match of the day in the Gray Draw. She topped Jacqueline Jacques (Seattle) 6-1, 6-0. Unfortunately, Koehler fell in her second match to Anissa Bryant 6-4, 6-1. Koehler will resume play Saturday in the consolation.
Hanley Caras advanced in her opening match due to her opponent withdrawing. Second round she was downed by Lize Leenknecht (Washington State) 6-1, 6-1. Like Koehler, she will play from the consolation draw Saturday.
Alexandra Tallas was also in the Gray Draw. Her tough day saw an opening defeat and a tough loss in the consolation to Wena Tsan (Montana State University) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Peek and Polayes teamed up for a strong doubles win in the Crimson Doubles Flight. The duo handled business against Rita Bermudez and Almudena Sanz (Idaho) 6-4. They will team up again tomorrow.
The other GU tandem to advance in singles came in the Gray Doubles Flight. Caras and non-Zag partner Kaitlyn Brown (Boise State) move on after their Portland State University opponents withdrew.
The WSU Cougar Classic resumes play Saturday.
