PALO ALTO, Calif.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team completed action at the ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday with two singles matches and a doubles contest at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.
"This tournament exposed some areas we can work on and solidify before our next tournament at Saint Mary's," said Gonzaga women's tennis assistant coach Caroline Lilley. "I am thankful for the tough competition as now we have a clear idea in regards to our development plans. Throughout the weekend there were moments of great aggressive play and now we will learn how to sustain that in pressure-filled situations."
Playing in the Zags' final match in the tournament, Alex Bourguignon ended on a high note with a two-set victory over West Coast Conference opponent Zeina El Tawil. The Gonzaga freshman took the first set from her Santa Clara opponent 6-2, and she swept the second 6-0 for her second singles victory of the tournament.
Samantha Polayes, fresh off a Round of 32 match in the main singles draw Oct. 11, took part in a consolation contest against Michelle Lui from Seattle U. Polayes took six games from the Redhawk, but Lui won the match 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, Bourguignon and Franziska Koehler teamed up for the first time this weekend. They took on Portland's Cristina Saenz de Buruaga and Iveta Masarova in a match and hung tough with the Pilot duo bet fell 8-6 in the pro set.
Bourguignon, Koehler, Polayes, and the rest of the Gonzaga women's tennis team will return to Northern California for their next tournament, the SMC Invite hosted by Saint Mary's. That tournament will run from Friday, Oct. 24 to Sunday, Oct. 26 in Moraga, Calif.
