SAMMAMISH, Wash.—Sahalee Country Club may have been fogged in Tuesday, but the Gonzaga University women's golf team certainly wasn't as the Zags ended the first day of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in second place.
Fog delayed the start of the tournament by four hours, wiping out one round completely and turning the competition into a 36-hole affair. The Zags didn't let the delay faze them, however, as they shot a collective 294 (+6) in the only round of the day, good for second in the tournament. They're two strokes ahead of No. 4 Stanford heading into the final round.
"I'm really proud of my team, particularly for how they handled the fog delay and waiting for four hours to learn when they'd go play," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "They all stuck in there and everyone played hard all day."
Three Zags are in the top 20 after the first completed round, and all four scorers are in the top 30. Raychelle Santos leads the way for Gonzaga and is tied for second overall after carding a round of 1-under-par 71. The junior made four birdies during the round, tied for the second-most among all players.
Next, a pair of Zags are among 10 players tied for 17th as Ciera Min and Dania Uy both turned in scores of 74 (+2). Min played both sets of nine holes at one over par while Uy shot even-par 36 on the front nine and 2-over 38 on the back.
Just one stroke back, Alice Kim is tied for 27th after posting a round of 75 (+3) Tuesday. A string of three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-6 helped Kim remain near the top 25.
Rounding out the Gonzaga lineup, Angela De Villa is tied for 55th with a score of 81, nine strokes above par.
"Raychelle had a great round going," said Rickel, "but everybody stayed with our strategy and stuck with it. They all played hard. I just hope we can go out tomorrow with the same frame of mind and go about our business like we did today."
Washington leads the team competition with a collective score of 285, three strokes below par. The Huskies' SooBin Kim currently has the individual lead with a tally of 3-under-par 69.
The Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational will wrap up Wednesday, Oct. 8, with tee times starting at 9:00 a.m. for the Zags, again at Sahalee Country Club.
