SEATTLE - Gonzaga's crew teams took on some of the nation's best at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash., placing third in the Varsity 8+ on both sides on Saturday morning.
The men came in third at 17 minutes, 36.17 seconds behind the University of Washington and Oregon State on the 4,800-meter course. For the third straight week, the group of Danielle Moorhouse (coxswain), Joe Morris, Connor Murray, Jack Arata, Alex Yuska, Ben Duermit, Dylan Ojeda, Atticus Patterson and Alex Lund edged Washington State, this time by nearly four seconds. Western Washington, Puget Sound and Vancouver finished in the final three spots of the seven-boat race.
"The Varsity 8+ had a gutty performance today," men's head coach Dan Gehn said. "Our top erg score wasn't in the boat because of the stomach flu and two others in the boat were sick with it this morning. They got pressed early in the race course, but responded well in the second half. They could have folded but they are a pretty resilient group."
For the women, the Varsity 8+ team of Laura Brasch (coxswain), Kara Soucek, Devyn Bell, Maddie Turbes, Casey Burt, Meghan McCallum, Brooklyn Beeler, Madeleine Verspieren and Ingrid Stansberry held their own behind Washington and Washington State. The Zags were 30 seconds behind second-place WSU, but 43 seconds ahead of fourth-place Portland. Old Domonion, Seattle, Western Washington and Vancouver rounded out the last four spots.
"Overall we felt good about our racing today," women's head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "I felt like all the crews had solid outings. I think we had stretches that we could have been better and stretches that we did things really well. No surprises and no disappointments, which at this point in the season isn't a bad place to be."
In the Second Varsity 8+ races, the GU women were third at 19:32.37, while the men were sixth at 18:03.85. Gonzaga's Third Varsity 8+ also got in on the action, placing third on the women's side at 19:56.58 and fifth on the men's at 18:34.54.
The women's team wrapped up its fall schedule this weekend, but the men have one race remaining before both teams resume in March 2015. The crew will head to Pullman, Wash., at Waiwawai Landing for the Head of the Snake next Saturday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m.
