LAHAINA, Hawaii — The Gonzaga University men's golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic. James Fahy, David Ganz and Sean Walsh are all tied for 15th place.
The Zags shot 10-under par on the Ka'anapali Golf Course Friday. They totaled 274 strokes on Day 1, two strokes out of fourth and five away from second. No Bulldog shot over par on the first day. It was the lowest round Gonzaga has shot so far this season, as all five Zags shot season-best rounds.
Fahy, Ganz and Walsh are all three-under-par after carding 68 in Round 1. Brendan Connolly finished with a 70 (-1), and Will Brueckner was even par at 71.
"Individually, we got five good scores today," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Everyone played hard and it's great to see that kind of consistency from top to bottom.
"I'm very happy with the way the team carried themselves on the course today. I wouldn't say we played our best but we posted a good round. They stuck with playing one shot at a time and didn't let the little things bother them. While we're happy with our start, we know there's plenty of golf left to play and we'll approach it the same way as today."
Fahy was four-under-par through the front nine. Fahy and Walsh both shot only one bogey on the day. Connolly had a team-high six birdies, while Brueckner had the team's lone eagle on the sixth hole.
Second-ranked Oregon leads the 13-team field. The Ducks shot 30-under-par. Their five golfers are all in the top eight, with Brandon McIver leading all 73 participants at nine-under-par.
"The wind is a big factor at this course and you can see from the scores that it didn't blow today," Gray said. "That can easily change over the next two days."
The second round begins Saturday at 8 a.m. Hawaiian Time. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
