Zags Win All Seven Races At Sacramento State Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It was a perfect day for the Gonzaga University women's rowing team. The Bulldogs won seven-of-seven races at the Sacramento State Invitational Saturday, held on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
"It was a great morning of racing after a long week of training," stated Zag head coach Glenn Putyrae of his team who has been in California training since last Sunday. "We were most pleased to see our crews performing in a race the way they have been practicing. We are grateful to the staff at the aquatic center and coaches at Sacramento State for facilitating a great week of training and great race."
Each of the Bulldogs' seven boats - the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Novice 8+, Second Novice 8+, Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 4+ and Novice 4+ - won their respective races by open water and by at least 10 seconds.
The Zag Varsity 8+ clocked the fastest time of the morning, finishing the 2,000-meter race in a time of 6:38.6. Sacramento State - hosts of the invitational - placed second at 6:48.2, followed by West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's College in third at 6:57.2.
Gonzaga's Second Varsity 8+ actually had the second fastest time of the invitational, winning its race at 6:46.6. Sacramento State and Saint Mary's were second and third again, with times of 6:58.0 and 7:06.7, respectively.
After dealing with harsh waters at the Oregon State Regatta a week ago, the Novice 8+ and Second Novice 8+ had a smoother go of it on Lake Natoma Saturday.
The Bulldogs Novice 8+ crossed the finish line with a winning time of 7:08.4, ahead of the Hornets boat at 7:19.9, while the Second Novice 8+ won its race in 7:28.0. Sacramento State also took second in the Second Novice 8+ at 7:43.1
Rounded out the racing and victories for the Zags were the Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 4+ and the Novice 4+.
Gonzaga's top Varsity 4+ boat cruised to a victory in a time of 7:33.1; 12 seconds ahead of Sacramento State at 7:45.2.
The Second Varsity 4+ race closed out the racing at the invite with the Bulldogs claiming the victory in a 7:48.8.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, March 22 when they host both Washington State University and Loyola Marymount University. The race with the Cougars and Lions will occur on Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash.
**The Novice 4+ won its race but the times for the race were not available at the time of this release.
